North Gilas from Foothills Boulevard
The view of the Gila Mountains from the northern end of Foothills Boulevard is what I see when I travel east from our home in the Fortuna Foothills community east of Yuma, Arizona. This view is one of my favorite panorama scenes because of its dramatic, symmetrical look and because of the spectacular colors the peaks take on as the sun sets.
The view of the north Gilas from the end of Foothills Boulevard is a bit of an optical illusion. The overall scene at that location actually consists of several parallel layers of mountains that look at first glance like just one mountain.
The high peak in the center of this section of the Gilas doesn’t seem to have a consensus local name, nor does it have an official name in BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) records. For that matter, most peaks in the Gila range are un-named according to those agencies. I’ve started calling the peak in the center "Blaisdell Peak" simply because it’s close to an area called Blaisdell on Google maps; the Blaisdell gun range is also close by. What do you think “Blaisdell Peak” should be called? Please let me know on social media or via the contact form.
