Telegraph Pass
Looking due north from the end of South Frontage road east of Yuma, Arizona is the Telegraph Pass antenna farm, which relays microwave communication signals between San Diego and Phoenix. That view also includes the maintenance road that leads to the antennas and several neighboring peaks of the Gila Mountains.
I think of the Telegraph Pass trail and maintenance road as Yuma's most popular park, even though that infrastructure has no official designation. Each week hundreds (or is it thousands?) of Yuma natives and visitors to the area make the roughly five mile (round trip) trek from the end of North Frontage road to the antennas.
Even though the Telegraph Pass maintenance road is paved, hiking it isn't easy. The final section of the road features an estimated 20 percent grade and an 800 foot elevation gain in just 0.8 miles. Not every hiker who attempts the climb makes it to the top. But those who do are rewarded with spectacular views of Dome Valley, the Yuma Foothills (with Yuma and the Imperial Dunes in the distance) and the south section of the Gila Mountains.
